oscar recap.

The Oscars were pretty good this year, with much more entertainment than usual. Here is our personal highlight reel from the night!

-The fashion. While we wouldn't say this was a strong year for the dresses on the red carpet, it's always one of our favorite parts and below are a few who show-stopped...

Rooney Mara in Givenchy
Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton

Gwyneth Paltrow in Tom Ford

-The video actor tributes. It was nice to get a personal account from our favorite actors to get their take on favorite films and love for the movies.

-The Cirque de Soleil performance. They're just an unbelievable, live performance.

-The host. Billy not only made us laugh, but he cracked himself up throughout the show from the  opening video monologue where he dropped in to spoof the best films of 2011 and bits like guessing what the actor's were thinking.

-The presenters. While some of them were totally awkward and not funny at all (ahem Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow), some were pretty entertaining. Emma Stone's giddy, starstruck facade, and Chris Rock showing how easy and prosperous it is to be an actor were both pretty hilarious.

-The acceptance speeches. Christopher Plummer's supporting Actor win for "Beginners" began with the 82 year old saying, "You're only 2 years older than me, darling. Where have you been all my life?". He continued in his classy, funny manner thanking the academy, his "long suffering wife", and co-star Ewan McGregor, whom he said he'd share it with if he had any decency, "But I don't", he joked.
Meryl Streep won lead Actress for her role as Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady". She started her speech by joking that she felt audiences were upset by her win, quickly adding, "but whatever". She then thanked her husband and makeup artist, but I enjoyed the end best:

"I really want to thank all my colleagues, all my friends. I look out here and I see my life before my eyes, my old friends, my new friends and really this is such a great honor but the thing that counts the most with me is the friendships and the love and the sheer joy we have shared making movies together. My friends, thank you, all of you, departed and here for this inexplicably wonderful career. Thank you
so much. Thank you."
